TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

The world health organisation defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Many of us focus on our physical state but it is important that we try not to neglect our mental and social well-being. Mental health is just as important as physical because it’s a vital part of your life which allows you to adapt to changes, deal with relationships and cope with adversity.

After enduring the pain of losing loved ones who suffered with mental health illness, I decided to turn that pain into passion by trying to help as many people as I can, to lead a happier, healthier life. So in order to help anyone that may be struggling, I've outlined 5 important tips to help improve your mental health.

1 - Positivity Be positive. Positive thoughts are important for maintaining perspective. Having a positive attitude can help to minimise stress. If you feel like there is too much negativity in your life, get rid of it. Surround yourself with positive people - negative vibes from other people creates negativity for yourself. This also links in with gratitude. Take a moment to be grateful for what you have in your life - be grateful for the little things and appreciate your loved ones.

2 - Nutrition & Hydration I can't stress how important this is. Nutrition and hydration are significant factors that lead to improved mental health. The less nutritious foods you're putting inside your body; the worst your mental health is going to be. Focusing on adding good nutritious, wholesome foods to your diet such as fruit and vegetables will only improve your mental health immensely. It's also important to ensure that you are drinking an adequate amount of water daily. This can be different for everyone; drinking 2-3 litres of water per day is ideal; but try pushing yourself to drink as much water as you can.

3 - Physical Activity Improved mental health is a key psychological benefit of regular physical activity. When exercising, your body releases endorphins - a chemical that interacts with receptors in your brain that minimises your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling which is why you get such a 'high' after a run/workout. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress, deflect feelings of anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem and improve sleep. I find that when I exhaust myself with too much work, my mental wellbeing suffers. In this instance, I prefer to go for a walk, clear my head and focus on my mental state. Your choice of physical activity can be totally up to you - gym workout, swim, bike ride, walk with a friend, play a team sport, go for a surf etc.

4 - Open up to someone Talking about your feelings can be intimidating, but opening up to someone could possibly be the best thing you could do to help improve your mental wellbeing. Talking to someone could include a close friend, family member, work colleague, professional counsellor or even a stranger. Speaking up and getting whatever it is off your chest can make you feel better. If you're not ready to open up to someone, another option could be writing your thoughts down on paper. At least then, you've admitted your feelings to yourself and you can't hide from it. Small steps = progress.

5 - Take a break It's important to know when you need rest. Life can be overwhelming sometimes, especially if you have so much going on at once, your life can feel too cluttered and your brain overloaded. Don't be afraid to take that well deserved break because without a doubt, you've most likely earned it. Take a deep breath, and take a break. This could mean catching up on sleep or choosing to do something you love like going to the beach or watching a movie. Once you feel better, appreciate your self-gratitude and move forward with a clear mind.

Let's train together.
